Thurmont, once called Mechanicstown
Thurmont began as Mechanicstown in 1751, laid out by brothers Lawrence and John Creager on land near mills, tanneries, and toolmakers, and grew alongside the nearby Catoctin Furnace, which produced ammunition for the Continental Army starting in 1776. Roofs on one of Thurmont's 1751-era Mechanicstown homes should be assessed against construction across more than two centuries.
