New Market, a turnpike rest stop turned antiques capital
New Market was founded in 1793 along the well-traveled route between Frederick and Baltimore, growing as a rest stop for National Turnpike travelers before its first antique store opened in 1939, eventually earning it the nickname Antiques Capital of Maryland. Roofs on one of New Market's 1793-era turnpike homes should be assessed against construction well after that founding, in whatever stages a house saw.
